Ngāwhā Innovation & Enterprise Park - Mahinga Innovation Centre
Kaikohe, Northland
The Mahinga Innovation Centre is the central hub of the Ngāwhā Innovation & Enterprise Park . Designed to encourage local research and business development, the centre is based on a co-working model that allows business to rent or hire meeting rooms and desks. This encourages the sharing of knowledge and resources to help facilitate growth.
The main entrance opens straight into the centre of the building, occupied by a reception and café area, defining the communal focus of the whole site. To the left, are more permanent or long-term offices, inhabited by Far North Holdings Ltd. The right wing is occupied by Northland Inc and includes an open office area, meeting rooms and two laboratory areas used for a range of natural product manufacturing. Various areas are hired out to local businesses.
Snaking along the ground, the Innovation Centre blends with the uneven landscape around it. The one-storey building was designed to reference the surrounding hills without standing out as a blemish in the lovely rural setting. Inside, steel portal trusses allow for wide spaces and flexible arrangements. Native riverwood gives textural warmth in feature walls throughout the building.
